What is pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that centres on controlled movements, often done in repetition. Its focus is on building core strength and improving body alignment by strengthening deep abdominal muscles. Attending regular pilates classes can help minimise tension in your neck, shoulders, and back, improving posture.

Pilates also improves flexibility, increases energy, and enhances core strength.

The benefits of mat pilates are endless — here are four of our favourites:

Strengthens Core

Participants strengthen their core by tightening abdominal muscles while performing each controlled exercise using pilates breathing technique. Working your core muscles — the muscles around your trunk and pelvis — enhances stability, improves posture, and increases movement efficiency during sports and other physical activity. Having a strong core also protects you from back pain and injury.

Improves Flexibility

The stretching component of pilates makes it especially beneficial for increasing flexibility. Stretching the muscles helps improve mobility in the joints, making doing other exercises easier. While you’ll feel this benefit right away, it’s important to continue practising pilates or other forms of stretching, such as yoga, to see lasting results.

Makes You Stronger

While pilates doesn’t provide an intense cardio workout like running or cycling, it does build strength through resistance training. This is especially true if you use weights or props like resistance bands or balls during your workouts. You’ll notice increased muscle tone and definition with consistent practice. Follow up each workout with plenty of water and healthy food choices to stay hydrated and fuel your body for recovery and growth.

Improves Posture

Strengthening your core and improving flexibility can help correct poor posture by training the body to move in proper alignment. By engaging the core muscles, you’ll learn how to move to make you less prone to lower back pain and other issues related to bad posture.
