What Is International Yoga Day?
Each year on June 21st, yoga practitioners around the world gather to honour International Yoga Day — a global celebration of the practice that connects mind, body, and spirit. At Kindred Warrior, we’re taking this celebration a step further by intertwining it with the Winter Solstice and this year’s powerful theme: Women Empowerment through Yoga.
Proposed by India and endorsed by the United Nations, International Yoga Day was first observed in 2015. It aims to raise awareness of the many benefits of yoga — from improving flexibility and strength to promoting inner peace and emotional well-being.
The date, June 21st, was chosen because it marks the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere — the longest day of the year and a time of vibrant energy and potential. Here in the Southern Hemisphere, however, it’s our Winter Solstice, the shortest day and longest night. Rather than sunlight and outward energy, the Winter Solstice invites us to turn inward, rest deeply, and reconnect with ourselves.
What Does Winter Solstice Mean?
Spiritually, the Winter Solstice is a time of reflection, release, and renewal. It’s a sacred pause — an opportunity to sit with the darkness, honour what’s come before, and prepare for new beginnings. Pairing this energy with yoga offers a deeply transformative experience.
Our event is more than a class — it’s a ritual of empowerment. Through breath, movement, and meditation, we reconnect with our strength and wisdom as women and as a community.
Why Yoga Is So Important to Us
For Stel Coombe-Heath, owner of Kindred Warrior, yoga isn’t just exercise — it’s a lifeline. After experiencing a blood clot on the brain that changed her life, Stel turned to yoga as a tool for healing, recovery, and reconnection. What began as a physical practice evolved into a powerful spiritual journey, showing her how yoga meets us exactly where we are — no matter our story, age, or ability.
Today, Stel’s mission is to create safe, nurturing spaces where everyone can show up fully — messy, radiant, healing, strong — and reconnect with their inner knowing. That’s the essence of yoga, and it’s what fuels every class, workshop, and ritual we share at Kindred Warrior.
What Does “Yoga” Really Mean?
Yoga means union — the coming together of breath, body, mind, and soul. It’s a practice of integration and presence. On International Yoga Day, we celebrate this union not just individually, but collectively — as a community walking each other home.
What to Expect at Our Event
This 70-minute workshop will guide you through a nourishing sequence of gentle movement, restorative yin yoga, and deep meditation. You’ll be held in a sacred container where rest is revolutionary and connection is key. Afterward, we invite you to stay for cacao and heartfelt chats — because sometimes the real magic happens when we sit in circle.
Whether you’re a long-time yoga practitioner or a curious beginner, this is your moment to honour your journey, celebrate your light, and soak in the power of ritual.
