Busy But Overwhelmed? The Mindfulness Habit That Will Set You Free

I used to wake up, rush to work, and feel stressed and overwhelmed—despite attending a yoga class once a week. I couldn’t understand why my stress levels remained high. It wasn’t until an injury forced me to pause my usual physical routine that I had a revelation. When I eventually returned to a consistent yoga practice, I realised how much my mental well-being had improved. The key? Regularity. Practicing mindfulness and yoga consistently, rather than sporadically, made all the difference.

The Power of Small, Daily Rituals

Through my journey, I discovered that we don’t necessarily need a full yoga class to cultivate calm and balance. Instead, it’s about integrating small, consistent actions into our daily routine.

I started incorporating mindfulness rituals throughout my day—breathwork on the train, short meditations, or even gentle stretching before bed. These micro-moments of self-care added up. Not only did I feel the mental shift, but my body also began to relax.

In yoga, we learn that everything is connected. The practice is designed to create union between the mind and body. When we nurture one, the other benefits as well.

Why We Struggle to Prioritise Mindfulness

In our fast-paced lives, we are constantly bombarded with information, responsibilities, and distractions. It’s easy to fall into fight, flight, or freeze mode, where instead of taking a small step towards mindfulness, we do nothing at all. Instead, we opt for numbing behaviors—scrolling on social media, pouring a glass of wine, or zoning out in front of the TV.

But what if we changed the narrative?

One of my mentors shared a powerful quote:
“Don’t think of this as work. Think of this as a moment you get to have.”

Mindfulness isn’t another task on your to-do list. It’s a gift you give yourself—a chance to pause, breathe, and reset.

You Don’t Need Hours—Just 15 Minutes

Many people assume they need hours of meditation or a daily yoga class to experience mindfulness. While I absolutely encourage stepping onto your mat regularly, what happens in between those sessions matters just as much.

Research indicates that even brief mindfulness practices, such as 15 minutes of meditation, can significantly reduce stress and enhance focus. For instance, studies have shown that meditation can help with anxiety, depression, and insomnia, leading to lasting changes in the brain’s complex networks.

Additionally, incorporating deep-breathing exercises into daily routines has been found to effectively reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of calm and mental clarity.

Science shows that just 15 minutes of breathwork, yoga, or meditation can:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Improve focus and productivity
  • Enhance emotional resilience
  • Support overall well-being

So, how do we make these small habits stick?

Turning Mindfulness into a Habit

We often prioritise dentist appointments and haircuts—why not treat self-care with the same level of importance? Start by:

  1. Scheduling your yoga class like a non-negotiable appointment
  2. Creating micro-appointments for yourself daily—a five-minute morning meditation, a midday stretch, or an evening gratitude practice
  3. Keeping it simple and sustainable—small, daily rituals are more impactful than occasional, intense efforts
